Sin Legends

Sermon Notes | June 27-28, 2026

Spiritual maturity isn’t just how much we KNOW, but how much we OBEY.

URBAN LEGENDS ABOUT SIN

1. I’m not a BAD person.

“If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.”

1 John 1:8 (NIV)

Unless we see ourselves as SINNERS, we will not see our need for a SAVIOR.

“…all our righteous acts are like filthy rags…”

Isaiah 64:6 (NIV)

2. All sin is the SAME.

Our obedience or disobedience influences:

1. REWARDS in heaven.

2. PUNISHMENT in hell.

3. CONSEQUENCES on earth.

“That servant who knows his master’s will and does not do what his master wants will be beaten with many blows. But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows.” Luke 12:47-48 (NIV)

“Beware of these teachers of the religious law! For they love to parade in flowing robes and have everyone bow down to them as they walk in the marketplaces…But they shamelessly cheat widows out of their property…Because of this, their punishment will be the greater.” Luke 20:46-47 (NLT)

3. I’ve already SINNED, so I might as well CONTINUE.

“If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning.” 2 Peter 2:20 (NIV)

The most miserable people in the world are not NON- CHRISTIANS, but instead CHRISTIANS living in SIN.

“But each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.”

James 1:14-15 (NIV)

“Those whom I love, I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent.”

Revelation 3:19 (NIV)
